Preparing for Tragedy

The fall season is upon us and as we begin to see preparations for Halloween, thoughts of fear and its impact on our lives begin to creep up. The recent tragic event in Las Vegas that took the lives of almost 60 innocent concert-goers can make us reflect on our own personal vulnerabilities. The Las Vegas event occurred on the heels of two significant hurricanes that impacted Americans in Houston, South Florida, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. The following are 3 Steps we can all take to prepare ourselves to effectively manage our emotions when external forces beyond our control wreak havoc on our lives:

  1. Focus on What You Can Control: Anxiety lives in the future. When we are anxious, it is usually a reaction to an event or circumstance that has not actually occurred.  Anxiety is full of speculation and worry, both of which are counterproductive uses of our effort and time. We cannot control the weather, we cannot control the thoughts of a terrorist, but we can control ourselves and how we prepare ourselves and our homes for emergencies.  New York City has great resources that can be found here: Get Prepared
  2. Physically Prepare: Our bodies are the vessel through which our lives occur. While we may not be able to control the actions of others, we can make sure that our bodies are in the best position possible to withstand whatever comes its way.  This means eating right and incorporating regular exercise into our daily and weekly routines.  If you are a newbie to exercise, or time is of the essence, check out the 7 Minute Workout app for your apple or android device.  MyFitnessPal is also a great tool for tracking food intake while providing useful nutrition tips.
  3. Connect With Others: Life is about relationships and with so much uncertainty in the world, connecting with family, friends, and neighbors is more important than ever.  Not only does connecting give us a greater sense of belonging in times of turmoil and strife, leaning on the collective resources of others puts us all in a stronger position.  The recent tragedies in our country demonstrate how important community is and how essential relationship building is to our survival.
